TLA Series: What is SQL?

by John Stucky

What exactly does SQL mean?  In this installment of the Three Letter Acronym series, I'll explain the technical term in a way everyone can understand.

SQL stands for Structured Query Language.  This is a special purpose programming model that enables management of larger databases.  Today it is loosely used to refer to actual database systems such as Oracle or Microsoft.  Microsoft’s advanced database system is actually called SQL Server.  These database systems are what are used to store tables, records and fields for most business software systems today.  The good news is that users typically don’t need to know how the database works, they just need to use the interface the software provides, and the software takes care of interacting with the database.
